Edward Abbey

"Every man, every woman, carries in heart and mind the image of the ideal place, the right place, the one true home, known or unknown, actual or visionary."

"Here you may yet find the elemental freedom to breathe deep of unpoisoned air, to experiment with solitude and stillness, to gaze through a hundred miles of untrammeled atmosphere, across redrock canyons, beyond blue mesas, toward the snow covered peaks of the most distant mountains - to make the discovery of the self in its proud sufficency which is not isolation but an irreplaceable part of the mystery of the whole." - Abbey - The Journey Home

Is it still true do you think? Or has even that been overtaken?

it's a mighty big place, an extra road or two just helps you get there. Gettin back is the hard part, with your truck and body intact. The brain? It always stays...

Sadly, Retirement isn't even on my horizon (unless the film rights sell, and probably not even then). But some day a vacation is a definite possibility. I took a cross-country trip about 10years ago - stopped in Salt Lake City - always wanted to finish it.

on my first x-country trip in '73 driving a '63 VW bus, i awoke at a pullover spot overlooking Albuq thinking,"this is the most beautiful morning of my life". It took me 10 years to move there and never regretted it. The awe full, untouchable vastness scares many a city dweller but for me it's like looking through a telescope at galaxies and being there simultaneously.
